Thursday 10th October
Afternoon
tea on board a high-star ship is generally a special occasion. The tables are
laid with white cloths and serviettes; the waiters serve from silver trays
while wearing gloves; the harpist or another instrumentalist plays from the
ballroom floor. On some days there is a queue for tables and a longish wait if
you are in a group of four; on other days there are empty tables from which to
choose your favourite position. Sometimes afternoon tea coincides with an
interesting sight such as passing the Straits of Gibraltar or sailing through
the Dardanelles. all in all, it is a time to relax and enjoy. On most sea days
I meet up with a group of friends for a chat and a time to catch up.
